Terms of service
Plain terms for using API Ghana, buying datasets, and paid products such as My Feed.
1. Who we are and what these terms cover
API Ghana (“we”, “us”) is operated by API Ghana Ltd. in Accra, Ghana. These terms apply when you create an account, use the website or console, call the API at connect.apighana.com, subscribe to a plan, or licence dataset access. By doing any of those you agree to them. If you are using API Ghana for an organisation, you confirm you can agree on its behalf.
Questions about these terms: info@apighana.com.
2. Your account and API key
You need an account to read data. Keep your password and API key secret; you are responsible for activity on your account and key. Your API key is shown once when it is created or rotated and only its first eight characters afterwards, so store it safely. If you think it has been exposed, rotate it from your account page — the old key stops working immediately.
Give accurate details when you register. You can delete your account at any time from your account settings.
3. What you are buying
Datasets are sold individually as one-time purchases, priced on each dataset’s page. A purchase gives your account access to that dataset through the API and console for as long as the dataset is offered and your account is in good standing. Three datasets are free. Buying at least one paid dataset also moves your account onto the paid rate limits: 600 requests per minute and up to 500 records per page, instead of 60 requests per minute and 50 records per page.
Subscriptions are separate products billed monthly or annually through Paystack (mobile money or card). They include API plans, SMS rate alerts, media monitoring packages, and My Feed — a personal Ghana news feed based on topics and terms you choose, delivered in your account and optionally by email digest, instant email alert, and — on Coverage — SMS or a signed webhook. Access lasts until the period you paid for ends, unless renewed or granted by us. You can cancel future renewals from your billing or product pages; we do not claim ownership of the underlying news outlets’ content.
Payment is taken by Paystack on its own secure page; we never see or store your card details. Prices can change, but a change never affects a dataset you have already bought or a subscription period you have already paid for. Refunds are covered by our refund policy.
4. The data and its licences
Every dataset is compiled from published open sources, which are named on the dataset and in each record’s source field. What we sell is the compilation, cleaning, region and district tagging, and API access. The underlying data stays under its original licence, and those licences — not these terms — decide what you may do with the data you receive. For example, data from OpenStreetMap is licensed under the Open Database License (ODbL) and must be attributed; World Bank data is licensed CC BY 4.0. The full list is on the data sources and licences page.
You must follow the attribution and share-alike requirements of those licences when you publish or share the data or anything built from it.
5. Accuracy
The data is not produced or verified by any government body, and open sources have gaps and errors — OpenStreetMap coverage, for example, is uneven across regions. Datasets are provided “as is”. Every dataset can be previewed before you buy it. Do not rely on the data alone for decisions where an error could cause harm, such as emergency response or medical use.
Every dataset, figure, download and answer shows its source, when we last took it from that source (“last updated”), and the period its figures cover. The two are different: a dataset updated today can still describe an earlier year, because that is the latest its source has published. Figures marked “not current” are the newest the source has published but are older than they should be for how often it publishes. Figures are provided as the source published them, without warranty that they are complete, current or correct. Check the dates before relying on a figure, and check the original source where a decision depends on it.
6. Acceptable use
You must not:
- share your API key or account, or resell access to the API itself;
- try to get around rate limits, purchase checks or security controls;
- disrupt the service, or probe it for vulnerabilities without written permission;
- use the service to break the law or anyone’s rights.
We may suspend or close an account that breaks these rules. Where we close an account for a reason that is not your fault, we will refund datasets bought in the previous 30 days.
7. Availability
On the Free and Developer plans we work to keep the API and website running, but we do not promise uninterrupted availability or any particular response time, and there is no service level agreement.
On the Business plan we commit to 99.5% monthly availability of the API, measured on the readiness endpoint, and to answering support email within one business day. If availability in a month falls below 99.5% we credit 10% of that month's fee, and below 99% we credit 25%, against your next invoice on request within 30 days. Scheduled maintenance announced 48 hours ahead and outages caused by your own systems or by the upstream data sources are excluded. Enterprise plans carry a signed agreement with their own targets and a named contact.
We may change, add or remove datasets and features; if we withdraw a dataset you bought in the previous 30 days, we will refund it.
8. Liability
To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, or for loss arising from errors or gaps in the data. Our total liability to you for any claim is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law.
9. Changes and governing law
We may update these terms; the date at the top shows the latest version, and we will email account holders about material changes. These terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of Ghana, and the courts of Ghana have jurisdiction over any dispute.
