Karat says how much of a piece is gold: 24-karat is pure, 22-karat is 22 parts in 24 (91.7%), 18-karat is 75% and 14-karat 58.3%. The value is the weight of pure gold times the gold price.

The gold price here is the World Bank's monthly average in US dollars per troy ounce (31.1 grams), turned into cedis at today's mid-market rate. It is not a live price, and a buyer pays less than it: refining, testing and the buyer's margin come off.
