How it works

The outlines are from geoBoundaries, simplified to about 200 metres so the whole country is around 110 KB: light enough for a web map, detailed enough for a dashboard. They are published under CC BY 4.0, so credit geoBoundaries when you use them.

The GeoJSON is a FeatureCollection of MultiPolygons in longitude and latitude (WGS 84), with each region's name, area in square kilometres and centre. The CSV carries the same outlines as WKT.

The district outlines, and every dataset in the catalogue tagged to its region and district, are available with an API key.

Questions people ask

How many regions does Ghana have?

Sixteen. After the referendums of December 2018, six new regions were created from four of the old ten: Brong-Ahafo became Bono, Bono East and Ahafo; Northern became Northern, Savannah and North East; Volta became Volta and Oti; and Western became Western and Western North.

Can I use these boundaries in a commercial app?

Yes. geoBoundaries publishes them under CC BY 4.0, which allows commercial use as long as you credit geoBoundaries.

How do I load the GeoJSON in a web map?

Point Leaflet, Mapbox GL or OpenLayers at the downloaded file, or fetch it from the API address shown and add it as a GeoJSON layer.
